THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO BUYING A YACHT

The Complete Guide to Buying a Yacht Through a Yacht Broker
By Edward Thurstan, Luxury Yacht Broker – YachtsByED, OneWater Yacht Group | Naples & Fort Lauderdale, FL

Buying a yacht is an exciting and significant investment—and working with a professional yacht broker can make all the difference. Whether you're dreaming of a sleek Sunseeker, a powerful HCB, or an elegant Riviera, having an expert guide you through the process ensures you find the right vessel, avoid costly mistakes, and complete all the required documentation with confidence.

At YachtsByED, we specialize in high-touch, personalized service for yacht buyers across Southwest Florida, including Naples and Fort Lauderdale. Here's everything you need to know about the yacht buying process and how a broker helps every step of the way.

Step 1: Define Your Yachting Goals

Before searching for a yacht, we’ll discuss your ideal vessel type (motor yacht, sportfish, day boat, etc.), size, intended use (cruising, fishing, charter), and budget. This ensures we focus on yachts that fit your lifestyle, whether you're heading to the Bahamas for the weekend or island-hopping down the Florida Keys.

Step 2: Search the Market

With access to exclusive listings, MLS, and off-market inventory, I’ll curate a shortlist of yachts that meet your criteria. You'll receive detailed listings with photos, specs, and walkthroughs—often including Sunseeker, HCB, and Riviera yachts, which are among the top-performing brands for our clients.

Step 3: Schedule Showings and Sea Trials

We’ll tour selected yachts in person or virtually. When you find one you love, we’ll arrange a sea trial so you can experience the yacht’s performance on the water. As your broker, I’ll evaluate condition, systems, and features to make sure everything meets expectations.

Step 4: Make an Offer and Negotiate

Once you’re ready, we submit a formal Offer to Purchase with a refundable deposit (usually 10%). I’ll handle the negotiation process, including price, inclusions (e.g., tenders, electronics), and closing timeline.

Step 5: Conduct a Marine Survey

A marine survey is essential for uncovering any mechanical or structural issues. We’ll coordinate an independent surveyor and haul-out for inspection. If any issues arise, I’ll negotiate repairs or price adjustments before moving forward.

Step 6: Finalize Documentation

Once all conditions are satisfied, we proceed to close. Here's what we’ll help you gather and process:

  • Bill of Sale

  • Coast Guard Documentation or State Title

  • Proof of Ownership and Lien Releases

  • Sales Tax Forms and Closing Statement

  • Vessel Registration and Insurance Coordination

  • Customs and Import Documentation (if applicable)

We work with marine lenders, documentation agents, and insurers to ensure everything is handled seamlessly.

Step 7: Delivery & Ownership Transfer

Once closed, we’ll coordinate delivery, dockage, and orientation with the captain or dealer. You’ll receive all records, keys, manuals, and service history.

For out-of-state or international buyers, I also help manage logistics like shipping, Bahamas clearance, or cross-border documentation.
